Description: Very nice plate - Measures about 9.75" in diameter - Heavy weight is 1 lbs 8 ozTwo birds handpainted with black background and lovely floral rim with yellow background. Marked on the back and shown in the photos - No chips No cracks and in very good condition for it's age. Yamatoku" or "Mountain Virtue" and is reckoned to date to the late Meiji to early Taisho era, in other words, 1910 - 1920s. When properly stamped it looks like this. The name was derived from Yamaguchi Tokuichi (i.e., Yama & Toku) who was responsible for the commercial expansion of the kiln in the early Meiji era.The palette is a revival of old 18th century Edo period painting, itself a copy of Chinese famille noire of the Kangxi period (1662-1722). The black color is achieved by applying a copper-green lead based enamel over an unfired coating of cobalt & manganese, allowed to dry, which combination makes a completely opaque black. This creates a very pleasing illusion of receding negative space, such that the reserved designs, in this case the blue & magenta flowers & leaflets, seem to pop right out almost in 3D.This is a used item so minor signs of wear should be expected.
