It fits the Winchester 1897 shotgun as well as the British Pattern 1914 rifle. This comes with a metal and leather scabbard with a WIRE BELT HOOK. They are similar to the M1905 bayonets which do not fit the M1917 rifle. In order to differentiate the two, the M1917 had two (2x) slashes carved into the wooden grips. Overall, this bayonet is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition, considering its age. The press catch is functional with average spring tension. Both the pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They have scattered light scrapes, oxidation and a couple light impact marks. The remaining color has started to turn a patina color. The two screw escutcheons securely fasten the wood grips. They have light oxidation with semi-strong slots. The wood panels have light draglines and a couple small chips. The wood has started to darken with age. The spine, fullers and sides have handling marks and scrapes. Some of the finish has worn off the leading edges. This could be in part because it has a tight fit in the scabbard and does not come out smoothly. There are no nicks or dings on the blade. The blade edge appears to have been sharpened and not the original factory edge, but it could be because of the tight fitting scabbard. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. It retains most of its original finish. The left side ricasso is marked "1917" and "REMINGTON" within a circle. The right side ricasso is marked with the Eagle head over "29" and the flaming bomb over "US" next to an "X". The leather/metal scabbard is in Very Good - Very Good condition, considering its age. The locket and chape are both securely attached to the leather. They have a tight fit and do not wiggle. They both have scattered oxidation scrapes. The leather body has no rips or tears and the stitching is sewn tightly. There are scattered scrapes and most of the finish is still intact. There is a marking on the locket that is hard to read, it looks like a "GS" or "G5" within an oval. This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your US / British WWI rifle, trench gun, or a bayonet collection in general.
