WW1 French Map "BESANCON"

Description: I have just managed to source a dozen more WW1 French maps which all relate to the very beginning of the war. At this time, it seems that (like the British) the French were not prepared for war in terms of mapping as many of the maps are printed from survey maps dating to around the turn of the century, with some having slightly later revisions. Only as the months progressed and the war became more 'entrenched' did the Allies mapping services kick into gear.This map (an 1883 edition of an 1841 survey), entitled "BESANCON" would have been useful for troops navigating their way to the most Southern tip of the Western Front during the first few months of the war, or on supply routes thereafter. The French managed to prevent the Germans from ever reaching this area, but due to its position in the mountains on the River Doubs it was still important logistically.There are a couple of routes marked in orange pencil which lead in the general direction of the Front from the town of Montbarrey. (see photos)The map is worn in places with half a dozen or so small holes from repeated folding. Measures 90cm x 63cm.Will be shipped as per its existing fold lines.
