This original WWI photograph depicts a crashed aircraft labeled "LIBERTY-CRASH" caused by fog, taken in 1918 during the conflict. The setting appears to be an airfield in France, likely reflecting the operational area of the 157th Aero Squadron, where pilot Sgt Alexander Wilson served. Individuals are seen inspecting or recovering from the crash, emphasizing the challenges faced in early aviation amidst wartime conditions. The phrase "LIBERTY-CRASH" likely refers to a specific incident involving the aircraft, possibly linked to the era of Liberty Bonds, which were crucial for financing the war. Aviation was particularly perilous during this time, as pilots often had to navigate through poor visibility caused by weather conditions like fog, which could lead to dangerous situations, including crashes. This photograph not only serves as a record of an accident but also reflects the repercussions of evolving aviation technology during WWI. "LIBERTY-CRASH" CAUSED BY FOG.
