Description: WALTER CRANE (British, 1845-1915) "The Dance of the Five Senses" Original 1899 Pre-Raphaelite style chromolithograph, published in "The Studio" Magazine. A frieze, with five sets of couples, all dressed in colourful Medieval costume, set against a plain grey background. Each couple represents one of the Five Senses, with the attributes of fire, flowers, fruit and wine, looking glass, peacock feathers and a lute.A fine quality, large chromo- lithograph, produced from the original artwork which Crane would have submitted to the editor Charles Holme for inclusion as a Supplement. It was probably a joint commission between The Studio and The Art Worker's Guild, who collaborated on the "Beauty's Awakening" pageant staged at the Guildhall, London in 1899 which was extensively and exclusively produced by The Studio in a Special Edition. Crane was one of the main members of the organising committee for this landmark event. Bears monogram lower left corner, and the all-important "Studio" blindstamp is just below the caption. Very good condition, the colours are bright and vibrant, with the central vertical fold as issued in the double-page publication. I have not used paperweights to flatten it out, but it will flatten. The fold is soft, and looks to me as if it could be fairly easily ironed out.My last photo is a screenshot of the British Museum's example, so you can see how it looks once the fold is ironed out. The main image areea measures 12.5 x 36 centimetres, with good wide margins beyond should you wish to mount/frame it. Lifetime and contemporary impression - produced in the same year as it was created. "The Studio" was a lavishly-produced, prestigious quarterly celebration of art, to which both leading and promising artists offered examples of their work. Some were commissions from the editor, too. Whistler, Beardsley, Waterhouse, Vallotton are just a few of the artists whose original graphic work was featured. The publication took lithography to new heights in the 1890s, producing superb quality images. Printed on off-white wove paper. REFERENCE: British Museum,1921,0819.19
