Description: Vintage/Antique Rag Doll from Celia & Charity Smith – Doll Inventors Condition: Vintage Pre-Owned – Good (considering her possible age) This is a 14½” Antique Printed Cloth Doll. The doll was printed in panels and was sewn by the buyer at home. The doll is in good condition, but has discoloration from age. This doll was purchased in January 1971 at a Mayflower Hotel Show and is presumed to have been created many years earlier. She was designed by Celia & Charity Smith. She was originally marketed in 1889 by Laurence and Company of Boston. She is approximately 14½” tall and 8” wide (outside edge of hand to outside edge of other hand) Celia & Charity Smith (sisters), American. Co-inventors of doll designs that could be printed on cloth and then cut out. From 1889 their cut-out patterns were available on the market. These could then be sewn together in the home to produce the actual doll. A very novel and economical approach to doll production. This doll was purchased at an estate sale featuring an extensive doll collection.
