Description: Vintage/Antique carved marble statue of 'Fedele' or 'Spinario' - Dimensions are : 11 1/4" high , 4 11/16" wide , 5 1/16" deep - Material is white marble - hand carved. This beautiful marble sculpture is a replica of the world famous work known as Spinario or Fedele , The Boy with a Thorn , a Greco-Roman Hellenistic bronze sculpture of a boy removing a thorn from his foot. It is an artistic commemoration of the legendary figure 'Marcius' a 4th century bce boy who ran barefoot to warn Rome of an Etruscan attack despite having stepped on a thorn. The legend is that he didn't stop to remove the thorn until he reached Rome and delivered his message. The word 'FEDELE' is carved into the front of the bottom base. This reproduction is executed in white marble and is hand carved. It is wonderfully carved and is a very faithful copy to the original which is in the Palazzo dei Conservatori , in Rome ( we have included a pic of the original bronze in the photo section ). While wonderfully done , it has been repaired , and rather well. Examine the photos , the figure of the boy is in pristine condition , it is the base upon which he sits that has been repaired . Given that he sits on a pile of stone , the repairs very much disappear into the piece although the repair is still evident (see photos). Given the repair , we have priced this piece at well under the $500-$600 it usually fetches. It can be yours for much less. It's a beautiful carved marble work.
