Description: Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome. You are looking at one of the rarest Turner S22X variant model microphones ever sold and I have never even seen or heard of this type until now. This is the Schulmerich Electronics 5-103 model based out of Sellersville, PA. Turner sold a few of their microphones under other brand names over the years which was very common for both Electro Voice and Shure Brothers as well. Turner sold the 22D and 22X under the RCA brand name as well but I have never even heard of Schulmerich Electronics. That company had had special ordered the S22X from Turner and used their badge on the mic making this a very special and hard to find model. I'm not sure how many of these were sold by S.E back in the 1940's but the serial number on this example is 7808 so perhaps they ordered 10,000 from Turner? But again I have never seen this brand or even heard of them. It should be noted right away that despite the very nice cosmetic condition of this microphone it has been tested and the element no longer works. It should be used for display, prop or repair purposes only. Pic # 2 shows this very model in an old 1940's Turner catalog. This 5-103 model mic based on the more common Turner S22X crystal microphone and was the top of the line 22X having the on / off switch which made the mic a bit more expensive to buy. Most microphones in the 1940's did not have an on / off switch because of the additional costs of adding one. This heavily deco inspired piece with satin chrome finish makes this one of the most widely recognized microphones ever produced from that era. The 22 series came in several different styles over the years with the only changes coming in the lower half that carried the Turner badge and the type of element used. The 22 series microphone either had the crystal element or the dynamic element. This variant utilized the crystal element but again, no longer works. These were omni-directional mics that were used for general broadcasting and even for singing purposes. This is the variant that is very seldom seen and I haven't had one to offer in a couple years now. This 5-103 is going to make a fun and unique mic to add to any vintage mic collection due to it's rarity. As you can see the mic itself is in very nice physical condition with its only real flaw being a subtle bit of pitting on the right side of the head of the mic as seen in pic # 11. Otherwise, it's dang near perfect. Even the Schulmerich Electronics label looks really nice. The joint mechanism works perfectly and it can be adjusted via screw for more or less tension. The on / off switch slides smooth and does work. The threading for the cable and mic stand are perfect. No issues. The mic will screw onto any desk or floor stand you have though an older Snyder DM-1 model stand is provided. MICROPHONE STAND IS PART OF THIS SALE... Microphone stand is a cast iron Synder DM-1 model that compliments the mic very nicely. Due to the design and age they look like they belong to each other though the Synder stand is about 10 years newer than the mic. The stand is a 1950's / 60's era model so it's just about period to the mic and certainly would have been used with this mic at some point in time. The DM-1 has that classic deco vibe with it's 3 tier "waterfall" design and the stand makes for a very stable platform. It's physically just as nice as the mic too. The chrome stem / riser looks really nice with a minimum of wear. The base has a bit more wear as seen in the pics provided but only on the underside which you won't see anyways. The original black painted base is free of any scuff marks, pitting or scratches. The base has lite rust stains but there are 3 new felt pads on the bottom that work great. Total height with stand and mic is appx is 11 1/2 inches tall X 5 inches wide. As with all my vintage items... I can promise you will be happy with it for the price paid. If not...I have a no hassle return policy. The shipping will be on you as I believe that's fair but the purchase price would be refunded. Simply return in the same nice condition...period.
