Description: This delightful ornamental half round grille is entirely hand wrought with blacksmith hammered rivets and dates to the19th c. Measuring 8" tall (add 1 3/4" for mounting spikes) x 13 1/4" wide x 3 1/4" deep it looks like Fraktur in hammered metal. The surface was rather thoughtlessly cleaned leaving bare metal and light brown with black. There are 2 rivets (one on either side) that no longer anchor anything and the center flower wiggles, but is in no danger of falling out. The blackish areas suggest it spent a good part of its life at a hearth. I see no obviously missing elements. It most likely anchored on a small hearth to hold back coals in the fireplace.
