The box shows wear, but the compass inside is in perfect working condition. From the looks of the case, I would hazard a guess that this was a well used compass that was kept in good condition. The thin slide bolt on the case is pulled out to open it. It looks like the head of a nail, and there is a circlular metal piece on the other side that when closing, the thin slide bolt can be pushed in to fully close the top. .
