Description: Estate sale find. I can’t even begin to explain how lovely and unexpected it was to find this beautiful bag in a closet at a modest, low profile, one-day only estate sale. The hang tag and sewn in label told me who made it, but would they still be in business and respond to any questions I had about it? Yes. Alan McKinnon is the man behind Narragansett Leathers and he was kind enough, in partial retirement, to respond to my questions about the bag. It is a model (BC3) that is no longer made. It measures 17” wide, 5.25” deep and 12.5” tall. The thick, bridle leather body of the bag is fully hand stitched and the seam at the top of the inside pouch was finished on a machine. It is adorned with brass rivets and the closure belts (also with brass hardware) are also the mechanism for holding on the sturdy handle. This bag is classic and in AMAZING condition. Alan told me that if it were to be made exactly the same today, the price would run upwards of $700 or more. If I were to keep it, I would be tempted to ask Alan if he would add a shoulder strap. Who better to modify on a wonderful design than the designer and craftsman himself. When found, there was considerable verdigris around the brass hardware. I have cleaned that off as best I can - it might need a little more attention. Alan told me just not to store it in a basement, attic or garage and definitely don’t store it in plastic - and it should keep without developing further verdigris. It has been treated with a coat of Skidmore’s beeswax based leather treatment and is ready to use. This, without question, is an heirloom piece that will last for decades and beyond. Smoke free home.
