About the Model 302 PhoneIntroducing the Model 302 desk telephone, designed for the Bell System by the renowned industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss and first released in 1937. Originally constructed with a die-cast zinc housing, after 1941 later 302 models transitioned to thermo-plastic housings due to the metal demands of World War II. The 302 series was a pioneering Western Electric desk telephone that incorporated the ringer and induction coil within the phone itself. Unlike previous models that required a separate subscriber set or bell box attached by a line cord, the 302 series offered a more integrated design. This 302 model telephone is one of the early 302 metal housing models made before 1942 and not one of the later 302 phones made with thermo-plastic housing. The early metal 302 phones are generally considered much more valuable than the thermo-plastic ones manufactured from 1942 until 1954. The 302 phone is known around the world as the "I Love Lucy Phone" due to its use in the long running “I Love Lucy” television show starring Lucille Ball.This phone has a modular cord so just plug it in to an analog telephone line and begin calling and receiving calls. If your phone service is from a cable company’s internet-based service, this phone will only be able to receive calls, unless you add an adaptor such as a “Dialgizmo” to convert rotary dial pulses to touch tones. These adapters are extremely easy to install and require no modifications to the phone--just plug the phone into the adaptor and start dialing. The entire restoration process was performed by a former 38-year veteran employee of the Bell System who has collected phones for over 40 years. Shell: The shell of the phone has been carefully stripped down and sandblasted. It has then been coated with a semi-gloss black finish using powder coating techniques. This finish closely resembles the original metal 302 model, preserving its vintage look and charm. Notably, the metal body 302 shell is heavier than the thermo-plastic 302, so it does not move around when dialing as the plastic 302 is prone to do. Dial: The No. 5 dial operates smoothly, having undergone a comprehensive restoration process to guarantee years of trouble-free service. It has been fully disassembled, thoroughly cleaned, lubricated, and meticulously checked for calibration. The number plate has been cleaned and if needed a perfectly matching overlay has been expertly applied. The metal finger wheel has been freshly powder coated to enhance its appearance. Cords: This phone is equipped with brand new brown cloth-covered cords that are meticulously crafted using the same type of equipment originally used by the phone companies. The line cord features a modular connection, facilitating easy modern connection to your wall jack. Both the modular line cord and the handset cord are made in the same manner as the originals. Handset: The beautiful F1 handset has undergone a thorough restoration process to ensure it provides both excellent quality voice transmission and voice reception. It has been buffed and polished to restore its beautiful original shine. Bells: The dual matching, harmonized 41A and 41B brass bells were cleaned and polished, and give the phone its unique and memorable ring that never fails to capture everyone’s attention. Internal Components: The various internal components were cleaned, tested, and reinstalled to ensure proper functionality to Bell System standards.
