Description: I have owned this Watt pottery policeman cookie jar for approx. 27 years. I purchased it an antique store in Pennsylvania where I bought and sold antiques for several years. I only saw one other policeman cookie jar in that same area and it was $2500 back in about 1998, when Watt was in high demand. I am an avid Watt pottery collector; however, I have downsized my living quarters and am selling my collectibles, including many rare Watt pottery pieces. The policeman cookie jar is considered rare because only a small number were produced in one batch in 1951 with only a few dozen or so made. This piece is guaranteed original and the measurements and other features also show that it is an original. For example, the base is approx. 5 5/8" tall and the base width is approx. is 7.5" wide. This cookie jar is approximately 10.5” tall. The reproductions are not as tall or wide at the base--they are much smaller. This piece also has a clear glaze inside and outside including the base--the fakes do not have glaze inside or on the base. Dennis Thompson, the author of one of the Watt pottery books, wrote an excellent article on the subject if you would like to google these details. Flaws are as noted: The bottom shows some paint flaws under the glaze and some pockmarks. The spot that looks like an air bubble is really a black speck of paint under the glaze. There are many small stains on the inside of the base as shown. There is clear crazing you can see if you are very close up. There are three glazed over nicks on the side of the base. I believe they were in the making because I see glaze on top of them. The bottom base shows what looks like brush marks in the clear glaze. The lid also has a few manufacturing flaws--inside the head at the knob part is a manufacturing circle "crease" or separation; therefore, I do not pick this piece up by the top of the head. I don't think there is any risk, but because of the price, I dare not do that. There is also an area with what I call a yellow bump on the side of the lid. This is also in the making. There is a very small air bubble hole that looks a lot bigger in the pictures. You have to search to find it. There is a stain on the outside with a factory flaw line or mold line glazed over shown that goes partly around the bottom of the lid (not a crack—see video) and some manufacturing flaws like pock marks on the lid too. Clear crazing throughout the piece but I don't see it unless I have magnified the piece. You may have better eyes. Please review all of the pictures and the video. I have described this as best I can, but it is not a perfect piece. It displays very well! Please feel free to message with any questions. Based on the cost of this item, someone over 18 will be required to sign for it. I will more than likely mail this in two boxes for safety. The shipping price includes added insurance and delivery confirmation. If shipping is more, I will pay the difference. Buyer to pay within 3 days of auction's end. Thanks for bidding!
