Description: Offered for sale is a Magnificent Bald Eagle Wood Carving by Tom Taber and John Fairfield produced while they were working in San Jacinto, California. This particular carving was part of their Woodendare line and is one of their signature pieces. As such a large carving, they were done in limited numbers and often only available to select dealers and buyers. This is a prominent wood carving measuring over 22" H x 11" W x 17" L. The very large carvings are certainly coveted by Tom Taber, Hersey Kyle Jr., and John Fairfield collectors and remain in private collections for decades. I have two of these eagles so am going to let someone else enjoy this one. It is certainly one of my personal favorites along with the Brown Pelican and Snowy Owl. The uniqueness of their work is due in part to the semi-transparent stain and paint they used. One can see how the eagle compares in size to the pelican in photo 24. The Bald Eagle is life-size and free of any breaks or repairs. As in all of Tom Taber's larger pieces, there are natural flaws to the wood he incorporated into the carvings themselves. Please note there is an area along the right side of the breast and leg that was filled in with brown wood puddy when the eagle was made (photo 18). A reddish-brown sap has leaked through this line where the wood was joined and can be seen in photo 19. It has never really bothered me, and I have always considered it part of the carving. But, it is present. Additionally, there is a thin crack on the lower back that was natural to the wood (photo 16). Some small dents are present on the wings (photos 13 & 23), upper back (photo 15), and wood base (photo 7). I believe some of these are parts of worm holes that were cut when the carving was crafted. It is possible there is a very small chip to the left tip of the beak (photo 11). The flaw does not extend to the right side, and it is stained yellow but a little lighter (photo 20). Notice the great cast iron legs and talons in photos 8 & 9, and the details to the carved breast feathers in photo 12. There is rasping on the head and neck (photos 5, 11, & 14). My other eagle does not have any of the rasping and has a smooth finish. I like the rasping and texture better on the eagle for sale. If you have any questions, please let me know. I apologize for the long write-up, but there was a lot to cover. The eagle will be heavily bubble wrapped and mailed in a very large box with plenty of extra cardboard and paper packing material. Thanks so much for looking and Good Luck! The eagle is the only item for sale in the listing. It is a wonderful piece ready to be enjoyed by another admirer.
