How rare is it to come upon a piece of Unger Bros. that is in such mint condition that it looks exactly as it must have looked 125 years ago?! There is not a single ding or dent to the silver—anywhere! The sides are pristine. The images follow the lid as I turn it around. The top is pristine with the design crisp and sharply defined. There are no holes in the silver or any visible scratches. The American Brilliant Period cut glass base (Unger’s “Newark” design) seems near perfect. I have run my fingers around it several times and encountered no obvious rough chips or flakes to the feel but upon close visible scrutiny there are teensy, tiny and I mean minuscule areas of chipping. I’m wondering whether this piece was even ever used. It’s a large size, just over 5” in diameter and very impressive. When the light catches the cuts in the crystal in a certain way there is a rainbow of glorious color. Full UB marks. The piece is extremely heavy because of the cut glass base. It will have to ship Priority Flat Rate Medium Box. The design is taken from mythology and features the god Cupid tenderly kissing Psyche to bring her back to life. They are surrounded by heavenly clouds as this is the moment of the actual kiss and Psyche has not yet emerged from her lifeless slumber. She presents passively, while Cupid urgently but tenderly clasps her face in his hand so that his kiss to her lips will be true.
