She and Howard began as a duet.Later, Stella was added, making it a trio. Eloise came along to make it a complete quartet. (She stillholds the honors of being the "World's lowest Female bass singer.")In later years, Ruth, Sam, Rusty and Bobby became a part of the group. Thus was formed in thebackwoods of Alabama a singing group, that in later years was to travel the length of America, thrill-ing the hearts of literally thousands, with their respect for, and inimitable styling and interpretationof the gospel song.In the many travels of The Happy Goodmans (Revivals, Concerts, All Night Singings) fortunately, theinevitable happened. Happy Howard met a young lady from Fyffe, Alabama, who was soon tobecome Mrs. Howard Goodman — Vestel Freeman. Adding her beautiful high soprano voice to thegroup, she seemed to put the finishing touch to the vocal arrangements. The following years brought marriage to all the sisters; Air Force, and Army life to Sam, Rusty, and Bobby; leaving just the two of them, Howard and wife, Vestel, to carry on, doing mostly revival, and church work. Moving to Madisonville, Kentucky, they began pioneering a work for God. Uponhis discharge from the Air Force, Sam joined them, using his ability as choir director of "Life Temple"Church (which they are still postering). After serving two years with Uncle Sam's Army, plus a year with Martha Carson (a great lady ofgospel songs) and five and a half years with the Plainsmen Quartet of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as theirbass and M.C., Rusty made the move to Madisonville and the group he loved, once again to become apart of The Happy Goodman Family, just as it is today. As I write the article for this album, I am reminded of the many recordings which I have been apart of in the past few years. Recording with such fine people as Gov. Jimmie Davis, the late JohnnyHorton, Claude King and others. But I can honestly say, I have never before been as thrilled andexcited over being a part of any recording, as I am over this album, "I'M TOO NEAR HOME."This being The Happy Goodmans' very first album, we can truthfullysay, we have picked the very best songs from down through the yearsfust for you. Such songs as, "I'M TOO NEAR HOME," "BORN TO SERVETHE LORD." Featuring the powerful God-annointed voice of sister Vestel. The happy lyrical voice of Sam can be heard as he does, "I SAW THELIGHT." Happy Howard comes through with great feeling of his owncomposition, "GIVE UP." I get a chance at one of my own compositions:"THE ANSWER'S ON THE WAY."We sincerely hope you enjoy listening to the album only half as muchas we enjoyed making it for you. Our thanks to the Nashville Musicians, who provided "THE NASHVILLE SOUND" (Walter Haynes, David Jones,Autry Inman and Willie Ackerman). And our humble appreciation toMr. Russell Sims (President of SIMS RECORDS) for having enough faithin us to make this album possible.First of all we dedicate this album to our mother, Mrs. D. S. Goodman,of Cordova, Alabama. Posthumously, to our dad, Papa Goodman, whopassed away October, 1959. And to the parents of sister Vestel, Mr.and Mrs. G. M. Freeman of Fyffe, Alabama.Rusty Goodman Thank you for your business. Gallimoresgoods
