Description: Rare antique reliquary for Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, one of the most popular of the Catholic Saints. This reliquary was made before she became a Saint, which means before 1920; you can tell this as the label inside the reliquary reads "B M. M. Alacoque", the B standing for Blessed, her status before 1920 canonization. This is a beautiful reliquary, framed in wood with convex or bubble glass framed in brass. Inside is a lovely leaf or star shape behind a photo or print of this Saint, it may actually be a leaf or bark, or thin piece of wood. Below is the article of the Saint on a small diamond shaped backing. All of this is mounted on a pale blue background, blue a color often associated with this Saint. The back of the reliquary has remnants of the red official seals, which would originally had a red ribbon connecting the two. However, it appears it has never been opened, as on the bottom is a seal still unbroken that says "Du Bouquet de Noisetiers ou N. S. apparut a la Bse Marguerite Marie". Using my high school French, this loosely translates to" from the bouquet of ? where Jesus appeared to Blessed Margaret Mary". This reliquary back is covered in black paper, typical, and old hanging loop on the back as well. It measures 3 & 3/4' tall and 3 & 3/8" wide and is in very good condition. It was made in France, probably by Sisters of a Religious Order, to be given out to the faithful. This was one of the first reliquary we acquired and it has been a blessing to have it in our home. A short history of this Saint: Healed from a crippling disorder by a vision of the Blessed Virgin, which prompted her to give her life to God. After receiving a vision of Christ fresh from the Scourging, she was moved to join the Order of the Visitation at Paray-le-Monial in 1671. Received a revelation from our Lord in 1675, which included 12 promises to her and to those who practiced a true to devotion to His Sacred Heart. The bubble shape glass made this hard to photograph, but the photos show all the important parts of the reliquary.
