Description: Personal letter from a publicly disgraced and clearly anguished Vice President Spiro Agnew found in stash of paperwork and mementos - Senator Thurmond was my mother's Uncle; from Edgefield SC - the seat of the Thurmond family. My father therefore rose through the ranks of government employees (no surprise in those days) as well and this must be how this intimate correspondence was obtained, after the resignation of Vice President Agnew - my father was a fan of the Nixon administration and very much supported both men. In the letter I would characterize the former Vice President is angry and seems to want to portray how he was victimized in this very interesting and personal musing. The envelope is marked officially as Office of the Vice President, but the letter format appears relatively informal, does not have letterhead and is on watermarked Strathmore standard writing paper. The signature appears in pen. I can ascertain that my father was eventually appointed as the US Cabinet Secretary's Regional Representative for the Southeast for HEW/HUD under President Ronald Reagan, and I believe this letter along with other documents from his office files found posthumously may be important and exciting to a collector. If this letter was a common reply to inquiries about the former Vice President's options and plans to redeem his record and Mr. Agnew's replies are stock, we have not seen an example brought to market any time recently in research.
