Bill comes to the theatre organ profession by a unique route. He has spent many decades as a church organist, has nearly forty years experience and holds graduate degrees in that field. He spent fourteen years as a keyboardist and singer for touring rock bands in the 1980's and '90's and spent ten years as a college professor of music. When Bill first arrived in this area we soon became friends. It was my pleasure to tutor him in the history of the theatre pipe organ over the past seven years. I have watched him develop from a church organist into my Associate Organist of the Kentucky Theatre. Bill has been instrumental in revitalizing the Bluegrass Chapter of ATOS and assisting with the restoration of the original Wurlitzer which someday will be reinstalled in the Kentucky Theatre. Dr. John Landon (Author, Historian and Organist of the Kentucky Theatre) CAROLINA THEATRE ORGAN The Carolina Theater organ is a 3-manual, 10-rank theatre pipe organ (Opus 2344 with additions). Designed and built by the Robert Morton Pipe Organ Company of Van Nuys, CA, it was shipped to the theater and installed in 1927 as a 2-manual, 6-rank instrument. Over time, the original console fell into disrepair and was replaced by a 3-manual console built by the Smith Organ Company (Frederick Smith) in 1999. Theatre organist Walt Strony played for the opening concert on the new console in 2000. The additional four Robert Morton ranks of pipes were made operational in 2020 during preparation for this recording. Like most theatre pipe organs, this instrument also contains different types of bells, tuned percussion, drums, cymbals, and other sound effects, as these types of instruments were made to replace the pit orchestra and to accompany silent films.
