JEWEL INSPIRED BY THE SHRUNKEN HEADS (TSANTSA) OF THE SHUAR It is a unique and original Necklace of ethnic-tribal style created by hand by Amira Munteanu Bergmann. She took inspiration from the ritual of the shrunken heads (tsantsa) of the Shuar or Jívaro, Indigenous tribe located in the southwest of the Amazon rainforest, in the area of Ecuador and a part of Peru.The Jewel is made of a series of beads intercalated, on the front, by semi-spheres in avocado wood and by some feathers of different kinds of birds.From the center hangs a hand molded in polymer clay. Its front side is painted with a light background embroidery. The back side is with a dark one.Two pendants composed of various elements of terracotta, cold ceramic and long tassels are attached to the thumb and forefinger.Instead, to the middle finger hangs a 3D mini-sculpture of a head with two faces (the former with gold and silver skin, the latter with black and gold skin) framed by long rows of white beads acting as hair. From the head hang two more sequences of beads and as many tassels.Since the main parts of the Bijoux are shaped and painted by hand, if, on the one hand, they may present some irregularities, on the other hand they make this jewel a small work of art without equal. TSANTSA: MEANINGS AND RITUALS "Tsantsas" are shrunken human heads, specially prepared, used for apotropaic, trophy, ritual, or trade purposes.Headhunting has occurred in many regions of the world, but the practice of headshrinking has only been documented in the northwestern region of the Amazon rainforest. Jivaroan peoples, which includes the Shuar, Achuar, Huambisa and Aguaruna tribes from Ecuador and Peru, are known to have shrunken human heads.The practice of preparing shrunken heads originally had religious significance; shrinking the head of an enemy was believed to harness the spirit of that enemy and compel him to serve the shrinker. It was said to prevent the soul from avenging his death.
