Rufus Edmisten was born in 1941 in Boone, North Carolina. He completed his secondary education at Appalachian High School in 1959, followed by his undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1963, and subsequently earned his law degree from George Washington University School of Law in 1966. Edmisten dedicated the initial twelve years of his political career serving as an aide to Senator Sam J. Ervin Jr. In 1974, he returned to North Carolina to pursue the role of attorney general, a position he held until 1983. Although he was the Democratic candidate for governor in 1984, he was unsuccessful in the election. In 1988, he re-entered the political arena and won the election for secretary of state in North Carolina. Edmisten concluded his public service career in 1996.
