OVERVIEW Royston Maldoom (b. 1943) QUICK REFERENCE (bLondon, 25 Mar. 1943) British choreographer and community dance pioneer. He started his dance training at the age of 20 (having been a student of agriculture) and studied at various institutions including the London School of Contemporary Dance and the Alvin Ailey School in New York. He choreographed his first work in 1975, subsequently choreographing for Dance Theatre of Harlem, Northern Ballet Theatre, and Scottish Ballet among others. In the 1980s he became involved in community projects in Scotland and helped to form the Dundee Repertory Dance Theatre (later Scottish Dance Theatre). Aspiring to high standards of dance theatre, Maldoom has worked with disadvantaged children in Ethiopia and Peru; prison inmates; and children and adults with learning difficulties. In Berlin (2003) he adapted his production of The Rite of Spring (1990) for a cast of 250 young people and the Berlin Philharmonic, filmed in the award-winning documentary Rhythm Is It!. In London in 2008 he created Overture 2012 at the Albert Hall, with 120 young people and the London Symphony Orchestra playing Shostakovich's Tenth Symphony.
