Description: No chips or cracks Some spoon scratches on the bottom. The American Civil War (1861-1865) was a conflict between the 11 Confederate States of America, and the United States of America. Southern Confederates, or "Rebels" fought to form an independent nation and maintain their traditional slave based agricultural lifestyle. Northern Unionists or "Yankees" fought for preservation of the United States. Nearly 400 battles raged over 26 states. Places like Gettysburg and Manassas are stained into the fabric of American history with the blood of the 600,000 war dead. Brave but outnumbered Confederate forces terrified Union opponents intimidating them with battle-cry of the "Rebel Yell." Legendary Rebel bravery however was no match for the larger better equipped Yankee force. On April 9, 1865, Overwhelmed, Robert E. Lee, Commander of the premiere Confederate force, The Army of Northern Virginia, surrendered at Appomattox, By the end of June the war was over. Paintings © Mort Künstler ACUPS-2
