Dakota was admitted on November 2, 1889, later dividing into North and South Dakota, becoming the 39th and 40th states respectively. Montana claimed the title of the 41st state on November 8, closely followed by Washington on November 11. A few select flag manufacturers began producing 42-star flags even before the official inclusion of the 42nd star on July 4, 1890. However, those who sought to be the first to create an up-to-date flag were taken by surprise when Idaho officially joined the United States on July 3, 1890, just one day before the addition of stars 39 through 42. The 42-star flag is fascinating from a historical perspective, particularly because 42 was never an official star count.
