Description: Unique copy of “The Bishoprick Garland, or a collection of legends, songs, ballads, &c belonging to the county of Durham,” bearing the stamp of the "Bibliothéque de Tsarskoe Selo” and inscribed, "Sir Cuthbert Sharp to his imperial Majesty the Emperor of all the Russias." Tsarskoe Selo, now Pushkin, is located about 15 miles south of St. Petersburg and is home to two former imperial residences, the Alexander and Catherine palaces, which also housed personal libraries of royal family members. Tsarskoe Selo was the place for official receptions of Russian nobility and foreign representatives visiting Russia on diplomatic missions. Between 1835 and 1837, prominent County Durham resident and landowner, John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham, served as Ambassador to Russia. The book may have been a gift to Czar Nicolas I during Lambton's time as ambassador. First edition, 1834, published by Nichols, and Baldwin & Cradock, London. Morroco leather cover, gilt tooled details, and gilt edges. Compiled by Sir Cuthbert Sharp. Volume has some shelf wear. Includes several engravings, all in good condition. One on page 24 has some marks on it.
