The evergreen rosette leaves are narrow, with spikes around the margins. They are compact and have a silver-gray color to them. The flowers appear on an inflorescence that reaches 5 feet tall and several feet above the rosette leaves. The flowers are tubular with a deep purple almost black color with bright yellow stamens. It can be grown in large containers and coastal gardens. They will also thrive in exotic and city parks. A drought-tolerant plant that requires little water once established and is excellent for a xeriscaping environment. It prefers to grow in full sun, where it blooms in mid-spring until early summer. Zones 9-11 Germination Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds on top of the medium and lightly cover with soil. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic and keep temperatures around 75-85F. Germination is in 21-90 days.
