The 1989 Tim Burton film was a resounding smash, but Prince's standalone album has a mixed legacy perhaps because of its role as a bit part in a blockbuster machine. Peel back the years and hear the songs afresh though, and there's so much to savour from the Linn Drum flaring beatdown 'Batdance' to quintessential good-time jam 'Partyman' and through to the smoochy ballad 'Scandalous'. Prince was in his prime when he made Batman, and his talent quite simply is unparalleled on this or any other album.
