Description: Original map of the "BELGIAN CONGO" which was produced by the Belgian military mapping services ("Militair Cartografisch Institut") for the country's 'Ministry of Colonies'. The survey is dated December 1935 and it appears to have been printed in May 1936 - exactly four years before Germany's defeat of Belgium threw the colony's fate into uncertainty. The colony continued to be governed by the exiled Belgian government, and officially supported the Allied war effort, but their exports and resources were exploited by both sides. This occurred both through official exports and less reputable channels such as the smuggling of huge quantities of diamonds to Nazi Germany. A number of Congolese troops chose to fight with the British in East Africa and the Burma Campaign. The 'Belgian Congo' gained independence in 1960 and is now a Democratic Republic. An unusual map in very good condition. Has only one fold line, a couple of small edge repairs and an archive storage number in the bottom right corner. Will be sent rolled in a stout cardboard tube.
