Description: OPHELIA (John Everett Millais, 1851) Shakespeare's heroine inspired a number of artistic interpretations. In this version, Millais endured heavy weather to paint a natural outdoor scene at a chosen spot in Malden, Surrey. He spent up to eleven hours per day on the scene and his patience was especially tested by some swans frequently disturbing the water plants. Once the backdrop was painted he had his model, Liz Siddall, pose in a bathtub to accurately represent the effect of water on her dress.
