Description: Nikolai Gogol by Vladimir Nabokov. 1944, First Edition, first issue with 5 titles listed on the half-title verso. In the first issue dust jacket designed by Alvin Lustig, showing a hand holding a pen (later issues had a fleur-de-lis design) and 4 titles listed on the rear flap. Published by New Directions / James Laughlin as part of their Makers of Modern Literature Series. Hardcover. Frontis portrait of Gogol. Very Good in a Very Good dust jacket. Book fresh and soundly bound. Signature of the former owner, diplomat Lucy Peters Wilson, in ink on the fly leaf, and her neat pencil underlining on about 50 pages. The DJ is price-clipped; shallow chipping to spine ends and corners; minor rubbing and edgewear. DJ now in a mylar wrap. Lucy Peters Wilson Benson (1927– 2021) was an American government official who served as the Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs from 1977 to 1980. When Benson was named to this post, it was the highest position ever held by a woman in the United States Department of State. An interesting association copy, considering that she was probably heavily involved in dealing with Russia during her time at the State Department. This is the rarest and most important of the MML series titles. A true Nabokov first edition.
