Description: From the private collection of Tim Gagnon - KSCartist aka "The Patch Guy." NASA SKYLAB PROGRAM Limited Edition Commemorative The 2013 Skylab Program Patch was good but we knew we could do better. In 2017 we did. AB Emblem makes and sells the permanent Skylab Commemorative program patch and 50th anniversary set but I am offering the last 30 limited edition patches that I made to gift to those involved in the program. The description:The three areas of focus for Skylab were the Earth, the Sun and human physiology. The science investigated aboard Skylab ushered in an awakening of our Earth, its environment and the ability for humans to live and work in space for extended periods of time. This 8" fully embroidered design illustrates not only the three crewed increments but pays homage to all of the astronauts who served in support of the program. The Earth is a copy from the original artwork created from a painting by Frank Kelly Freas, the artist for the Skylab I/2 crew patch. The 1973 story of this patch work provided me the "blueprints" for working with astronauts. The border colors evoke the non flammable mustard brown clothing worn on orbit.Green was used for Skylab and the names of the Prime crews that flew the missions.Walt Cunningham the first Astronaut to serve as manager of the Apollo Applications Program, so his name is ghost stitched in black under the letters “Sk” in Skylab.Bob Crippen, William Thornton and Bo Bobko were the SMEAT crew. The Skylab Medical Experiment Altitude Test was a 56 day simulation in a chamber at JSC to evaluate equipment and procedures. Their names are ghost stitched in the outer ring between prime crew names.Hank Hartsfield and Dick Truly who served as support crew during the program.Their names are ghost stitched in the inner ring. "Rusty" Schweickart, Story Musgrave and Bruce McCandless II served as backup for the first crew. Vance Brand, William Lenoir and Don Lind served as backups for the second and third increment crews. Their names are ghost stitched in the inner ring.Brand and Lind were also assigned to the Skylab Rescue mission that was to be flown during the second increment. That rescue capability is also illustrated in this patch.
