This LE86 version shows a cap in olive wood with UV razer leopard pattern engravings to provide the look of the leopard skin capes Hannibal’s soldiers wore as protection in battle. As Montblanc vintage Collectors know, the animalier pattern is something coherent with MB tradition. It’s famous and very sought after the Giraffe pattern on MB Precious Metal Safety fillers from 1921 – 1927. Regardless of the different stylistic choices adopted the distinctive feature of this new model is the clip in the shape of an elephant’s head. Yes, the famous elephants that were part of the Hannibal’s crossing of the Rhone and march towards the Alps. Between 1920 and 1940 Montblanc has expressed all its creativity giving birth to some very unique clips (of whom the most famous is the iconic Montblanc snake clip). So, there are many examples but I shall limit myself to two; the spectacular silver clips depicting the whole mountain range and the summit of Montblanc were produced for the French market only. Equally famous is the Montblanc monkey clip. As far as I know Montblanc never officially made a elephant shaped clip. However this kind of (unbranded) clip were produced between 1920 and 1940 with an interesting art deco design. So, I personally approve this stylistic choice. Another reference to the Punic cuirass of Hannibal’s time is the decoration on the cap, which recalls Phoenician armour. Symbolising the snowy mountain crossing in the Alps, the cap top is made of granite, crowned with the Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl. The barrel of the Hannibal Barca LE86 is made of black lacquer and translucent black resin under an ornate skeleton made of Au 750 red gold. The Au 750 red gold cone and ring recall the rings worn by the Roman aristocracy. The lacquer inlay on the end on the cone refers to the impressive mosaics found at Carthage and the surrounding area in modern-day Tunisia. A laurel wreath like the one appearing on the ancient Hannibal coin is engraved on the handcrafted Au 750 red gold nib.
