Description: "For sale is NWA 13788, a Lunar Melt Breccia meteorite discovered in December 2020 near Ouargla, Algeria. This sizeable find showcases dark stones on the surface and light-colored stones buried in sand. An exquisite shaped endcut weighing 12.814 grams, it boasts a polished surface, abundant metal flakes, and a striking melted matrix. The impact melt texture indicates it may have been melted by lunar surface impacts or during excavation from the near-surface. The area of origin likely experienced at least two impacts: one causing melting and another propelling it out of orbit. This lunar meteorite offers a glimpse into near-surface moon material with traces of external impactor material. It includes a Certificate of Authenticity card and a display case. Thank you for your interest and stay well." Lunar Melt Breccia meteorites are fragments of rocks that originated from the Moon. They are composed of a mixture of different rock types like basalt, anorthosite, and various minerals like olivine and pyroxene. The term "melt breccia" refers to rocks that have been partially melted and then broken apart and reassembled. These meteorites are important because they provide valuable insights into the geological history of the Moon and can help scientists better understand its composition and formation processes. Northwest Africa 13788(NWA 13788) Ouargla, Algeria Find: 2020 Dec Classification: Lunar meteorite (melt breccia) History: Purchased in 2021 by Matthew and Travis Stream from a meteorite dealer in Algeria. Physical characteristics: Specimen contains a dark-brown fusion crust. An interior slice reveals light and dark clasts within a darker matrix. Petrography: (D. Sheikh,FSU) Sample is an impact melt breccia composed of angular to sub-rounded mineral and lithic clasts (<4 mm) set in a predominantly vitreous matrix composed of brown, flow-banded, vesicular, partly devitrified glass and fine-grained crystalline impact melt. Lithic clasts consist primarily of anorthitic plagioclase (some partially coverted to maskelynite) with smaller quantities of olivine, pigeonite, low-Ca pyroxene, sub-calcic augite, and Si-Na-Ca-Mg-rich glass; a variety of lithic clasts were observed to display poikilitic, granulitic, dendritic, porphyritic, or subophitic textures in thin section. Accessory phases present include kamacite, troilite, chromite (some containing Ti), and ilmenite. Classification: Lunar (melt breccia). Specimens: 20.3 g atCascadia; main mass with Matthew and Travis Stream.
