Description: What an amazing find… My husband and I purchased a box of unknown items from a US Customs sale in Miami Florida 40+ years ago. As I recall, there were a lot of silk dresses, very old silk and lace dresses, and a few bits of odd things, including this teapot and stand. It has basically lived in a box in a closet in my home since the 1980s. I have done my research and what an incredible piece this is! This is a Mappin and Webb from 1860 to 1862, just before Mappin and Webb became Mappin and Webb, it was named "Mappin and Company". The hallmark on the bottom clearly shows the "Mappin and Co" hallmark. It also has the recognizable "sun" logo, along with "S&L", which I understand is for Sheffield and London. There's a number as well, I'm assuming it is the pattern number. There are no markings to indicate that it is silverplate or solid silver but seems it is silver plate. It weighs 4lbs 6oz. I have not cleaned it other than to wipe it down with a damn cloth. It hasn't tarnished much since we've gotten it and I don't dare polish it. I'll leave that up to the new owner. The design is very Victorian repousse, ornate, detailed, and lovely on every level. There are 2 medallions that were meant to engrave the owners initials - they are blank! The handle has the very ingenious bone heat resistors. The top is amazing. The lid has scalloped edges and fits perfectly. In addition it has a flower as its finial. The only damage that I see is that the hinge for the lid is missing the pin. I see no dents, no tears no repairs. The burner stand has two chains with little locks on them. I'm assuming this was part of the system that allowed this teapot to tilt. I'm sorry, but I do not have the actual burner just the burner stand and the teapot. The teapot sitting in the stand measures over 16 inches tall Teapot itself is about 13 inches. The two pieces combined weight 4 lbs 6 ounces. This is Mappin and Webb before it was Mappin and Webb. They were in business for only two years, but it was Mappin and Company, so I'm sure there's a very very limited number of pieces that actually have the Mappin and Co hallmark as seen this piece. For that reason it's rarity must be incredible… At least, from what I can see and read on this hallmark it is Mappin Company - I welcome any info from those in the know, thanks! Please view all the photos and contact me. Should you have any questions, I'll be happy to help, thank you!
