In this issue of Cell, Ibarbalz et al. (1084-1097) use molecular and optical approaches to show that diversity of most planktonic groups declines towards the poles, mainly driven by decreasing ocean temperatures, and to explore the potential response of plankton diversity to severe warming of the surface ocean by the end of the 21st century.
