Description: Limoges JPL Plate Artist Dated '08 Signed F.E.W. Hand Painted Roses 1908 Antique Limoges JPL Plate Artist Signed F.E.W. Dated '08 Hand Painted Roses 1908 Antique A beautiful antique LIMOGES JPL handpainted porcelain decorative plate ARTIST SIGNED and DATED '08 by F.E.W. DESCRIPTION: This georgeous plate is particularly striking with the delicate purplish pink roses with beautiful green leaves with blue and amber highlights on a pure white fine porcelain china background. The thorns on the vines add an element of realism to the painting. Given the age of the plate, the unworn gold rim around the edge of the plate adds to the beauty of it.CONDITION: While the plate is classified as used, we find it to be in remarkably good condition for its age. There are no chips, nicks, hairlines, or repairs to this stunning plate. The photos you are viewing are actually of this plate.DIMENSIONS: This plate is 9" in diameter.HISTORY/MARKS: This plate was manufactured and hand painted in Limoges France in the 1908 as is evidenced by the artist's dating. The decorator's backstamp is the underglaze whiteware mark J.P. over L. with FRANCE written in a crescent under the initials in green (Gaston's mark #5 1890-1932). J.P. is the abbreviation for Jean Pouyat and the L. represents Limoges France. The Pouyat family was one of the oldest French names connected with porcelain dating back to the 1760's. The overglaze mark in sienna gives the artist's initials as F.E.W. and definitively dates the plate as 1908. Both marks are clearly visible on the bottom of the plate.UPDATE: This artist painted on Limoges porcelain, particularly JPL items. We have this JPL plate signed F.E.W. ’08 for 1908. The whiteware mark J.P. over L. with FRANCE is written in a crescent under the initials in green. This is Mary Frank Gaston’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain mark #5 which was used in the 1890-1932 time period. We have seen an Limoges tankard mug with the signature F.E. Willard and it had the same JPL mark #5. We have a dresser tray set which has the F.W signature on the front of the tray and on the bottom side of one of the two perfume bottles. All of these signatures form the letters the same so we feel certain this is the same artist. Our estimation is female, American, painting in the early 1900’s on JPL porcelain imported as blanks from Limoges, France. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description.
