Description: Kiyoshi Saito (1907-1997) was one of the most important Japanese woodblock print artists of the 20th century. He became a pivotal member of the "Sosaku Hanga" or "Creative Print" movement in the Post-war period, attracting international audiences and accolades. In the spirit of Sosaku Hanga, he engaged with every aspect of the printmaking process, meaning that each of his works is self-drawn, self-carved and self-printed. This woodblock print is titled "Maiko III" and it displays the artistic features that Saito is known for- an elegant design focused on plain forms and full of color and texture. This print has bold blocks of color and a woodgrain element which is a hallmark of Saito's work. The woodblock is framed in a period 22" x 16" frame. The framed piece has anti-glare glass and a beige linen mat. The print itself measures 17" x 11". It is signed and stamped in the piece and has the number 3 written in pencil on the bottom. The top and bottom edges of the print show some warping and the back has residue from tape that was used to hold the print in place. These flaws are not at all noticeable in the frame. Kiyoshi Saito's woodblocks are highly regarded in Japan and internationally and "Maiko III" is a beautiful example of his work.
