Description: Completely restored Kenwood DPC-77. Boxed. Complete Set In 1988 DPC-77, and also Technics SL-XP5, Sony D-100 and Philips CD10MkII, shared the glory of being The Best Discmans. The King, Sony D-Z555, has not been born yet. But Sony's team must have used Philips and Kenwood ideas while designing their most expensive Discman. Photo from my own collection shows that D-555 looks more like Kenwood than any other Sony Discman. Apart from looking like a parent to D-Z555, DPC-77 also became the first-ever Discman with digital output. Unlike Sony, Kenwood guessed it right from the start and for the digital-out used superior Coaxial output instead of TOSLINK. For the internal signal conversion DACs from Burr-Brown is something you find only in the best desktop players. A total of twelve Discmans from Sony, Matsushita, Denon, Hitachi and Philips have PCM DACs ((*)) And, of course, two Kenwoods: DPC-77 (PCM-60) and DPC-80 (PCM-66) A unique feature of DPC-77 is its integrated battery, something not ever seen in any other Discman. Basically, it is EPB-100 from Sony used as a permanent 'bottom' to DPC-77. As expected, 35-y.o. 6V lead acid battery is dried-out and dead. Since the original 7V Kenwood adapter supplied with DPC-77 can not charge 7.4V Li-Ion cells, for this kit we were limited to 6V/1,200mAh Ni-MH batteries. These provide 3.5 hours of continuous play, full charge achieved in four hours Restoration was too arduous to describe here, but a few photos illustrate the process. In short: full recap, headphone coupling upgraded to Nichicon 200uF audio-grade caps, new IC chips, KSS-162A laser upgraded to KSS-220A, re-calibration. Plays even 80+min CD-R without any glitches. please consider photos as part of description, ask questions BEFORE placing a bid ((* D-7/D-10/D-15/D-25/D-555/D-J50 from Sony; DCP-100 from Denon; SL-XP7/XP5/XP6 from Technics; DA-P100 from Hitachi, CD10MkII from Philips)) -- my other restoration projects can be found at Square-2.com -- Six-months warranty from Square-2 may be added upon buyer's request --
