Description: Up for auction is a signed first British edition of John Steinbeck's, "The Log From the Sea of Cortez," published in 1958. This is John Steinbeck's non fiction account of his voyage on a marine specimen-collecting boat alongside his friend, marine biologist Ed Ricketts. In the publisher's original unclipped dust wrapper, it is Illustrated with a double sided portrait frontispiece. Steinbeck discusses the six week expedition made at various sites along the Gulf of California. He provides a eulogy to Ricketts at the start of the work. Ricketts shaped and inspired a number of characters in Steinbeck's fiction, including Doc from 'Cannery Row'. The book and jacket have some age toning which are shown in the photos. The author's signature appears on the title page. I purchased this book long ago from a bookseller and cannot provide any provenance to authenticate the signature. However, it appears to be genuine when compared with other exemplars of Steinbeck's signature. I am only selling it because I was lucky enough to obtain a signed copy of this same title that was published by Viking in 1951. Good luck.
