Description: This collection of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius' orchestral work is a wonderful introduction to his library. It includes six of his seven symphonies (No.4 is not in this set), plus his best-known tone poems and other orchestral works. Included are: "Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2" - Performed by The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Neeme Jarvi. Recorded in September of 1982, a digital recording released here by the Musical Heritage Society. Also included are "Finlandia" and "Romance in C Major for String Orchestra. "Symphony No.3" - Part of the same series as Symphonies 1 & 2, same performers and label, recorded in January 1983. Also included is "Suite from Kuningas Kristian II, Opus 27". "Symphonies Nos. 5&7" - These symphonies, No. 5 in Eb major, and No.7 in C major, are performed by the Wiener Philharmoniker under Leonard Bernstein and released in 1989 on the Deutsche Grammophon label. "Symphonies Nos. 1 & 6" - These were recorded in 1981 and 1986. Performed by the Berliner Philharmoniker under Herbert von Karajan "Tone Poems and Incidental Music" - This Telarc release from 1993, performed by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra directed by Yoel Levi features the most well-known of his Tone Poems and other orchestral pieces. included here are "Karelia Suite", "En Saga", "Pohjola's Daughter", "The Swan of Tuonela" and "Finlandia".
