Description: Yizhak Rabin Special Commemorative Coin 1996/5757 Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated on November 4, 1995, at a peace rally in Tel Aviv. Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, he was at the podium, joining in the Song for Peace at the close of the rally. After his death, a sheet of paper with the lyrics of the song was found in his pocket, stained with his blood. Born in Jerusalem in 1922, Yitzhak Rabin joined the Palmach in 1940. He filled a number of important positions in the IDF before being appointed Chief of Staff in 1964. He led the Israeli Forces to victory during the Six Day War in 1967 and was appointed Ambassador to the U.S. in 1968. Elected as Prime Minister in 1973, he resigned from office in 1977. Reelected Prime Minister in 1992, he served as Minister of Defense as well. Within a year he signed the Declaration of Principles with the Palestinians and in 1994, signed the Israel-Jordan Peace Treaty.
