Description: Isabel Bishop (1902-1988) was an American painter and graphic artist who studied under Kenneth Hayes Miller at the Art Students League of New York. She was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1941 and during her career her works were exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and other prestigious institutions. This striking etching plays with light and shadow and movement to depict students outdoors in a courtyard, with aquatint providing many textures to the composition. The etching is presented in an off-white matte with tasteful antique gold-colored frame. The exposed artwork measures 13 1/4" x 8" and the framed work measures 19 1/4" x 16 1/2". My late mother bought this etching at the Associated American Artists Gallery on Fifth Avenue in New York in the late 1970s while Isabel Bishop still worked at her Union Square studio.
