Sabine Weiss (1924-2021) Sabine Weiss is one of the main representatives of the current of French humanist photography, known to empathize the human condition. Born in Switzerland in 1924, she was first an apprentice photographer in Geneva before becoming after the war the assistant of photographer Willy Maywald in Paris. In 1950, she married the American painter Hugh Weiss and began her career as a freelance photographer. In the creative and exuberant atmosphere of their Parisian house-workshop, she will work tirelessly and build a unique and prolific photographic work throughout the rest of her life. Towards the end of 1952, she joined the Rapho agency and quickly became known. It was at this key moment in her career that she took this self-portrait dated from 1953, presumably to illustrate an article presenting her in the famous American magazine US Camera. Dressed in a serious but elegant outfit, she set the objective with a determined air, holding her Rolleiflex with both hands, thus asserting her status as a professional photographer, then 28 years old. Unconventionally, she chose to lay outdoors in front of a wall covered with graffiti. This date marks the beginning of intense work for several decades. His personal work was quickly exposed in the United States. Three of her photographs are featured in the famous exhibition “The Family of Man” organized by Edward Steichen in 1955, for the Museum of Modern Art in New York – an exhibition that will circulate around the world – and she works sustainably for the international illustrated press, chat, with news, fashion, advertising, portraits of personalities and social subjects. In the late 1970s, the recognition of his work by the institutions and the general public made him want to resume work in black and white. In this late work, rhythmed by distant journeys, she makes a more intimate voice heard, centered on loneliness, beliefs and pensive moments of existence. In the last ten years of her life, she knew an unprecedented notoriety and donated her archives to the Photo Élysée Museum in Lausanne. Until her last breath, on 28 December 2021 at the age of 97, she will have, passionately, approached all areas of photography as a challenge, a pretext for encounters and travel, a way of living and a mode of self-expression, in constant sympathy with the other.
