Description: Echoes in the Valley is a 476 page/50 year history of the drum and bugle corps activity in Watkins Glen, NY. This revised/expanded edition more than doubles the length of the original to include 477 pictures (167 in color) interviews and results from 271 contests dating back to 1933. From the end of World War I until the 1980s drum & bugle corps dotted the landscape particularly in the northeast and particularly in upstate New York where virtually every community boasted one at one time or another. Watkins Glen’s corps achieved success in the activity on a local, state and national level from the 1930s to the early 1980s and the dawn of Drum Corps International (DCI). The is a rich small town story and piece of Americana. The history of Watkins Glen’s four corps: The Squires, Pages, Legion Cadets and Seneca Chiefs starts with the American Legion and a dozen or so Boy Scouts in 1930 when the movement was spreading like wild fire all over the United States. The narrative includes first-hand accounts of the various corps activities from the 1930s, through the war years and into the birth and early years of Drum Corps International with special emphasis on the Squires’ growth to over 175 members and the corps’ “worst to first” run from a last place finish at the New York State Championship in 1969 to 4 consecutive state titles and national championships in the mid 1970s.
