This live plant is a 6 -12" potted fast-growing seedling, that will thrive in low, medium, or full sunlight. When planting Redbuds, due to its tap root it is best to choose a smaller seedling over a larger size for best transplanting results. Redbuds are one of the first trees to bloom in early spring. The numerous reddish purple buds start opening before the tree leafs out for a very showy and most welcome display in early spring, when most other trees are still bare. Is such a welcome sight after a long cold winter. Trees may bloom profusely even when very young. It is a cauliflorous tree, producing clusters of 4-8 flowers in fascicles at the axils of the leaves and along the branches and sometimes on the trunk, but most are on two-year-old or older wood. The flowers range in color from light rosy pink to dark magenta. Each typical pea-like flower is about ½ inch wide, with 5 petals and 10 stamens. The flowers are visited by many pollinators but only long-tongued bees can reach the sweet nectar. The leaves are a bright green tinged red when they first emerge from the winter buds, changing to dark green above and paler below when fully expanded. The alternate, cordate (heart-shaped) to broadly ovate leaves have smooth margins and prominent veins. Recommended Growing ZonesThe optimal planting zones for the Eastern Redbud are 4 to 9.SunThese trees grow well in full sun or part shade. However you will get the heaviest blooming from trees in full sun.SoilRedbuds are adaptable to any soil, including clay as long as it isn't saturated. The Eastern Redbud even tolerates both alkaline and acidic soils. Redbuds will grow best in a moist, but not wet soil.WateringAfter establishment, this redbud is drought tolerant. However, in extended drought periods this tree will benefit from a weekly deep watering. Adding a layer of mulch about 2 to 3 inches thick around the base of your Redbud will protect the roots and help them retain moisture. Be sure the mulch doesn’t touch the trunk as this increases the chances of pests and disease. Space the mulch about 1 inch from the trunk.FertilizingFertilize in early spring and when planting with a balanced slow release fertilizer to give your tree a boost.PruningRedbuds don't generally require pruning, but if needed, prune immediately after blooming has ceased to remove any dead, dying, crowded or crossed branches. Pruning in winter can cause bloom loss.Pests and DiseasesThere are not many serious pest and disease issues with Eastern Redbuds, but weakened trees can definitely be more susceptible to pests and diseases. Wet and humid summers can bring about fungal issues. Just remember most of these issues only affect the leaves and will not kill or even harm your tree. It is more of a cosmetic issue than anything. When the leaves shed in fall the disease is gone from the tree. Some fungal spores can overwinter. So cleaning up your landscape by raking and disposing of the leaves can potentially prevent the spread of disease the following year.
