Unusually expressive marbled endpapers (a bit chipped) and pastedowns; all edges gilt. The binding is Signed on the rear turn-in, "R.S.A. 1936." Book is overall very good, with the leather toned in places, hinges starting and upper shoulder split, and one short repaired tear on the front blank. There are two inexpert repairs on the binding: the upper hinge has been reinforced with tape painted blue to match the turn-in, and the shoulder has been touched up in worn spots with a blue pigment, in order to match the leather. A charming, Signed binding that seems intentionally a bit folksy, with two inexpert repairs that aren't exceptionally noticeable, containing the classic African American novel and basis for the world-famous Gershwin opera.
