Description: Dragon Armor King Tiger - Battle of the Bulge - Henschel Version Model - 60004, Vintage - 2003, Scale - 1:72 Unit - sSS-PzAbt 501 - Kampfgruppe Peiper of the Leibstandarte division (assigned to the Sixth SS Panzer Army under Sepp Dietrich). Prior to the Ardennes, Peiper fought on the Eastern Front in Kharkov (earning distinction) and the Kursk offensive in 1943. Campaign - Battle of the Bulge - Dec. 1944 Markings - Western front camouflage scheme with mottled light and shadow pattern (dark green, dark brown, tan and dots). No. "008" on turret with extra track armor. There is a photo of this tank (No. 008) with Peiper going through Tondorf on 16 December (SS-Kriegsberichter film). However, other research (Walden) notes that this tank belonged to the Battalion Adjutant SS-Untersturmfuhrer Eduard Kalinowski. The real tank had a large letter G painted on the lower glacis plate (could have meant march route but as there was no G route, it could have stood for Glysantin, a radiator anti-freeze that could not be mixed with other chemicals). Kampfgruppe Peiper spearheaded a key assault in the Ardennes offensive - hitting Stoumont as it tried to navigate a route west over the Ambleve and then the Salm. This group fought its last stand in "the cauldron" of La Gleize (where he ran out of fuel) which was one of the critical battles during the Bulge/Ardennes offensive. The tank ended up abandoned beside the N23 at the Antoine farm near Knittel's command post between Stavelot and Trois Points (25 December 1944). After getting permission to break out of La Gleize, it appears that many tanks either ran out of fuel or were abandoned due to engine trouble. Peiper had to abandon over 100 vehicles (including six King Tigers) and returned to German lines with 800 soldiers on foot. Peiper was unrepentant until the end and noted "History is always written by the victor, and the histories of the losing parties belong to the shrinking circle of those who were there." The Malmedy Massacre as well as other war crimes (deaths of civilians) around Stavelot were attributed to units under his command. This is a rare classic. This model is well-crafted and particularly eye-catching given the color scheme and history of J. Peiper in the Ardennes. Condition - new with minor wear on box. Thank you for your interest.
