Description: Doulton STONEWARE LambethCOLUMBIAN EXHIBITION PITCHERc.1893 / John Broad Designed by John Broad for Royal Doulton's Lambeth Studio in London, this stoneware jug was crafted to commemorate the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893. Held in Chicago, the exhibition (aka Chicago World's Fair) celebrated the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492. More than 27 million people attended the festivities, while approximately 50 foreign nations and colonies exhibited; 18 countries actually erected buildings. An astounding 65,000 exhibits were dedicated to science, the arts and industry. This piece is a stunning tribute to the unprecedented display. The Jug features an American Eagle in front of flags in pate-sur-pate relief. On each side of the eagle are relief images of George Washington and Christopher Columbus. A blue band near the top reads "World's Columbian Exposition 1893" in white letters. There are three additional bands of raised stars with cobalt blue bands. The very bottom and the very top of the pitcher are solid cobalt blue. The piece is 7.5" H and weighs nearly 3 lbs. The impressed Doulton Lambeth mark is on the bottom as well as "England" and the model number 8386. This piece is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or hairlines.
