LouisianaCarvers IndexBibliographyIndex Introduction One particularly exciting fall, 1 started hunting in Canada andfollowed the migration of ducks and geese down the Mississippi Flyway. The travels took me to Ohio, Illinois, Tennessee, Arkansas andLouisiana. It was interesting to watch the birds change from Fall toSpring plumage, to see the habitat fade from green to brown and torealize the phenomenon of Nature's great migration. During thesetravels, it was a wonder to me how the individual carvers of each areadeveloped different but successful decoy styles to lure the wild birds.Out of this wonderment came the desire to write a book about thedecoys of the Mississippi Flyway. That proved to be a giant undertaking. The purposes were twofoldto clearly document the classic decoys of the flyway and to present abroad spectrum of the individual makers from every important area.During my travels throughout the Mississippi Flyway to recordinformation and photograph decoys, it became apparent that much. moreinformation than could have possibly been used in this book. Muchmore information may rest in a single person's head and not be onrecord anywhere. This book is written as a challenge to these individualsto record this priceless information in future decoy publications before itis too late. Thanks go out to all those who helped me with this book. Furthergratitude goes to Roger Ludwig for his immense assistance on theWisconsin Chapter; to J. A. Tonelli, Jr., prominent Illinois River decoyhistorian, who gave freely his knowledge of the decoys, carvers andhunting traditions of Illinois; and to Brian Cheramie, foremostLouisiana decoy historian, for imparting his extensive knowledge ofLouisiana carvers. Special thanks go to Hal Sorenson for his inspiration,to Bob Dwyer for accompanying me on the Louisiana trip, and to JeanMenzer for patiently typing the manuscript. The friendships formed during the many exchanges of informationhave been very satisfying. It is hoped that these pleasant memories willendure forever. information on the carvers and their decoys does exist Alan G. HaidHamilton, OhioApril, 1981
