By January of 1936 he had left Hollywood goingto New York City where he entered Lenox Hill Hospital on January 17 to be treated fora venereal disease and a run down condition due to his excessive drinking. Hammett was an American author of hard-boiled detective novels and short stories, screenplay writer, and political activist. Among the enduring characters he created are:Sam Spade played by Humphrey Bogart in the most famous film version of The MalteseFalcon and Nick and Nora Charles played by William Powell and Myrna Loy in The Thin Man films. In 1931 Hammett embarked on a 30-year affair with playwrite LillianHellman. This relationship was portrayed in the film Julia (1977), in which Hammett was portrayed by Jason Robards (AA winner Best Supporting Actor, 1978) and Hellman by Jane Fonda (AA nomination for Best Actress, 1978).
